The ATA
ATA, or Air Transport Auxiliary, was a British civilian pilots’ organization that ferried aircraft and personnel during WWII. It’s members were pilots not able to serve in RAF, because of their nationality (e.g. as refugees from enemy countries), age and physical state, or gender. Wikipedia article on ATA
